For every complex problem, there is a simple answer and it's wrong.
Why did the killer shoot all those people?
There must be an answer. We demand answers. Finding an answer will help make sense of something terrible and give us back "control".
Did the killer do what he did because he smoked weed? Is that the real reason?
Or because he read a book? (He read more than just Karl Marx, by the way. A lot more. Read the full list. Funny how certain people decided to fixate on that one author and not mention a certain other, equally "famous political author" on the list.)
Sure, the guy's very likely insane but even insane people follow patterns and interact (at varying levels) with the world around them. Insane people can, oddly enough, be predictable.
So how do you figure out what makes assassins tick?
That's a reality question.
If you want to understand reality, then you have to study reality. If you want to study reality, then you go straight to the scientific process.

Science is the study of reality.
Forget the pundits and the half-assed guesses; go to the science.
