Miss USA: Should Evolution Be Taught In Schools?

Humanity is fortunate that the answers to the question "evolve" as the video progresses.

Miss California (at the 2:00 mark, the self-professed science geek) won the pageant, BTW.

Hey, she makes as much sense as the bozos in the Dept. of Ed.

Some of the evolution opponents sounded very bright and sincere. Some of the evolution supporters sounded very confident without being cocky.

Miss AK, DE, MA, NC all sounded good to me. It's the quality of their confidence and control of their emotions that made them winning responses.

But yes, the vast majority of them are mindless twits, including Miss Science Geek. What were the judges in KY and IN thinking? What were the Miss USA judges thinking?

In the girls' defense, they might not know the questions in advance, and a glib response while maintaining poise is more difficult than people realize.

The phrasing of the question worked to the disadvantage of the Christians. Ask the same girls whether Intelligent Design should be taught in school. This was clearly a softball for the lefties.

Ask the same girls whether they think parents should have the right to choose between evolution and creationism for their kids, and you'd have a more fair test of their character.

I really liked the responses of Miss AK and MA the best.

BTW, I believe evolution should be taught in schools as the leading but imperfect scientific theory on the origin and development of species. That theory does not preclude a divine origin of the universe and the deliberate design of a habitat and plan for intelligent humans. I believe that God created existence within which evolution works, and that God is a necessary and sufficient condition for life to have purpose and meaning. I believe my life has purpose and meaning, therefore God exists. If God did not exist, the universe would be completely indifferent to our existence and we, too, should be indifferent about our own existence, rendering our lives meaningless and purposeless. Morality would have no basis. Surviving and thriving would be as inconsequential as a coronal mass ejection, a comet slamming into Jupiter, an emission of gamma rays from a magnetar, or a frigid particle of matter remaining almost motionless in a vast sea of interstellar space. Our thoughts and actions would merely be a series of electrochemical reactions to endogenous equilibrating physical systems and exogenous stimulus. Winning the Miss USA pageant wouldnt mean anything in a universe formed by the random confluence of matter and energy.

God exists, therefore the Miss USA pageant has meaning and purpose.

Where's my crown?

Silly. No scientific theory is "perfect". All science is tentative.

That theory does not preclude a divine origin...

Meaningless Mumbo Jumbo.
What scientific theory does preclude "divine" whatever?

I had no need of that hypothesis"-Pierre-Simon Laplace

I believe that...

Oh, you "believe"? That's...um...nice.
(shrug)

I believe my life has purpose and meaning, therefore God exists.

Hmm, yes of course.
I believe my life has purpose and meaning, therefore Vishnu exists. I believe my life has purpose and meaning, therefore Baal exists. I believe my life has purpose and meaning, therefore Set exists. I believe my life has purpose and meaning, therefore Wotan exists.

If God did not exist, the universe would be completely...

Argument from Consequences.
Fallacy.

If Bugs Bunny did not exist, the Universe would be blah, blah blah...therefore Bugs Bunny exists.

I was amused/horrified by Miss Indiana. "Oh, I dunno! Leave it to the government!"

The theory that schools shouldn't be allowed to teach Intelligent Design.

I believe my life has purpose and meaning, therefore Vishnu exists.

If that's what you would like to call God. All the others might exist. The only thing we're sure of is that at least one of them exists.

If you choose to believe that your life has no purpose, Cedric, then the universe is indifferent between you posting on a blog and slashing your wrists. You too, should also be indifferent between these choices.

Or you could watch Bugs Bunny. But why? Why do you do anything?
