Good Night, Sleep Tight, and don't let The Bed Bugs Bite ! !

The law of unintended consequences is back!

MYFOXNY.COM - The AMC Empire 25 movie theater complex in the Times Square area shut its doors Tuesday night to deal with a bed bug problem.
AMC said it has been testing and treating its theaters after getting complaints from some patrons about bed beg bites.
The company said it inspected the Empire 25 Tuesday and found bed bugs in an auditorium that had previously tested negative.

Here's an email sent out to the CNN employees working in the Time Warner Center:

August 13, 2010
To: TBS, Inc. Employees
From: TBS, Inc. Human Resources

The Time Warner Center Facilities Department advises that bed bugs have been detected in Time Warner Center. This determination was made after testing was conducted on several floors of the building. In response, Time Warner Facilities is working with pest control providers to address the issue in an environmentally safe manner, and during non-working hours...

There's only one effective, efficient way to get rid of bedbugs.  That would be DDT.
Our government banned DDT in 1972.

"To only a few chemicals does man owe as great a debt as to DDT... In little more than two decades, DDT has prevented 500 million human deaths, due to malaria, that otherwise would have been inevitable."
- National Academy of Sciences

I'm sure that our government knows best.  But in the meantime, if you see Wolf Blitzer scratching his privates on camera, you now know the reason why.  CNN can't spray their building with DDT, which, if used properly, is ok to drink in small quantities.  (There used to be a cocktail called the Mickey Slim - Gin & a pinch of DDT.)
If you see Larry King scratching his privates on camera, it's because he has grown old and forgetful after all those years of throwing softballs to Democrats.
If you see Anderson Cooper touching himself on camera, it's because he thinks there's nothing like the feel of Anderson Cooper.
If Candy Crowley starts scratching herself on camera.....aww....never mind.    I'm not going there.
Sorry for the digression.  I'm really enjoying the idea of The Castro News Network having a bed bug breakout.  I apologize.

Here are the folks from Reason magazine on the DDT scare campaign:

Can we find a volunteer to sneak bed bugs into the EPA headquarters?

Who are they?

You want to be a skeptic?
Then start behaving like a skeptic.
Do some digging.
Who are they? Who pays their bills?

They have opinions about DDT?
Ok. Fine.
Their opinions count for something and we should all stop what we are doing and listen to them because…?

They wrote a nice book.
Is that why we should listen to them?
They look very serious and sober-minded and they wear nice suits.
Is that why we should listen to them?
Are they "experts"?
Is that why we should listen to them?

They claim that people don’t use DDT because of fear campaigns started up in the 60’s.
That’s interesting…if it’s true.

Fear campaigns.
Sounds like a bad thing.
I’m sure we can all agree that fear campaigns don’t sound very rational and scientific and that therefore that’s not good.

So…we’re not talking about science here?
It’s all just a fear campaign?
There’s no actual science saying that DDT is a big no-no?
Really?
It’s all just a 60’s fear campaign?
Hysteria and paranoia pushed by a bunch of lefties and commies and hippies perhaps?
Hmmm.
Sound bad…if it’s true.

If only there was a way to objectively and fairly…TEST…this claim.
Hmm.

If only there were lots and lots of scientists that knew something about DDT and malaria and pesticides.
Hmm.

Specialists in their field who’s job it is to know everything there is to know about DDT.
Hmm.

If there were then maybe, just maybe, they did some SCIENCE on DDT?
Hmm.

If only they wrote this stuff down somewhere (Hint: Peer reviewed research. Lots and lots and lots of peer-reviewed research).

It’s a long shot but maybe it’s out there somewhere?
A real skeptic might be curious enough to find this stuff out.

Then we could know for sure if DDT is the innocent victim of a 60’s scare campaign pushed by greenies who just cruelly ran roughshod over the scientific communities stalwart defence of DDT.
Or not.

For example, what did scientists think about DDT...BEFORE the 60's?
Was everything all hunk-dory before the diabolically evil scare campaign?

Now about this scare campaign.
How did it work? Who got it going?
Did the scientific community fight it tooth and nail or...did a very, very young Al Gore bribe the global scientific community to look the other way?

"To only a few chemicals does man owe as great a debt as to DDT... In little more than two decades, DDT has prevented 500 million human deaths, due to malaria, that otherwise would have been inevitable."

Wow.
The NAS!
Never thought I’d see the day when you cared one way or the other what the NAS had to say on anything.

(After all, they fully support the global warming hoax.
But never mind about that now....)

Judging from the quote, it’s very clear that the NAS is fully behind DDT.
No doubt they are fighting against the enviro-hippie-madness that has unfairly maligned DDT.
No doubt at all.
Only…well,…I clicked the link you provided.
I clicked it because I wanted to read the rest of what the NAS had to say.

Imagine my shock when the link didn’t actually go to the NAS.
What’s the deal with that?

How come you didn’t link directly to the source?
Why get your information from second-hand sources?

Imagine my greater shock when I found out that the quote was made in…1970.
1970? Wow!
Historical background is great. I’m all for it. Really!
But what does the NAS think about DDT....nowadays?
Maybe, just maybe, things have changed in 40 years?

Plus…well…where’s the rest of it? The link you did provide gave nothing else except the EXACT SAME QUOTE that you mentioned.
Is there a “but” or a “however” in the next line?
Beware of quote-mining.
Is the article that it’s taken from a ringing endorsement of DDT or…not so much?

A mattress protector specifically for bed bugs is the best way to protect your mattress. The idea of sleeping with these nasty buggers in your mattress makes me squirm. The Cotton Bed Bug Blocker Mattress Protector from Overstock.com is highly rated and has great reviews. I hope this tip helps!

Yeah, that's probably the best way to keep them out of your mattress IF you have them in your house and have given up.
The best way to end the problem altogether?
Tell our government regulators to go fornicate themselves, get some DDT, and kill the bedbugs.
(You'll see it on the market again in one year. Hide and watch.)

You're spot on!! Considering the fortune that they'll need to spend attempting to eradicate these pests.
