3 Possible Explanations For Leftist Behavior

Your chances of being seriously injured in an automobile accident today are much less than 1%.
If you have a baby in the car with you, and the child is not in a protective "infant seat", the child's chance of serious injury or death is still much less than 1%.  It's not even 1/100th of 1%.

But if you want to see our friends on the political left start tearing out their hair, ripping their clothes, calling the police, and having fainting spells, just throw a two-year-old in your car without strapping the kid into an infant seat, and make a quick run to the grocery store and back.  There is a very small chance that you could do some small injury to the child, and this makes nanny-staters have anxiety attacks.

Now, consider this:

If a government doesn't have any restraints on its ability to print paper money - i.e. "fiat currency" - the chances of inflation ruining its economy are 100%.  It will have a ruinous effect on every child in the nation.  They will all live diminished lives as a result of older generations refusing to pay as they go.  It will happen every....single....time.  ALL paper money has eventually become valueless (except to collectors and hobbyists) and it has always been the younger generations who are stuck cleaning up the mess.

Here's another fun fact.....  Each year in the United States, approximately 30,000 persons with BB and pellet gun-related injuries are treated in hospital emergency departments.  Most (95%) injuries are BB or pellet gunshot wounds; 5% are other types of injuries (e.g., lacerations sustained inadvertently while cleaning or shooting a gun, or contusions resulting from being struck with the butt of a gun). Most (81%) persons treated for BB and pellet gun wounds are children and teenagers.

That's why most of our friends on the political left don't allow their kids to go near a BB or pellet gun.  (Side note - When I was a kid, my friends and I often had minor BB and pellet gun-related injuries.  None of these battle scars were accidental, because we were shooting at each other.  Fun as hell, and the current generation of fragile, dainty, precious little snowflakes will never know that joy.)

30,000 minor injuries per year from BB guns, and 95% of the victims are children and teenagers?  That's a lot.

Contrast that unspeakable horror with this one.  The minority teen employment rate is now approaching 50%.  With 8 million minority teenagers in the U.S., this means 4 million are unemployed.

Our minimum wage laws make it illegal to employ them.

(The thought process of the Statists is that the kids are better off unemployed and jobless at a minimum wage of $7.25, than employed and productive at the wage of $3, $4, or $6 per hour that their skills are worth.)

Our friend on the left do not give a shit.  You really can't imagine the size of the shit which they do not give.  Go figure.

Our friends on the political left want to do whatever is necessary to protect us from the big, bad world.  They'll delay the approval and release of life-saving medicines, even though the delays probably cost us 100,000 lives per year.  They even boast about how many lives the new drug will "save" each year.  Do the math, and you'll quickly learn how many lives were lost by preventing the manufacturer from selling it 5 years earlier.

So why the disconnect?

My theory is that Statists just enjoy messing with agreements that are none of their business.  I don't like the idea that there are people whose skills are only worth $3.00 per hour.  I hate it.  But I also know that work of any type, for any salary, teaches people about punctuality, dependability, and other good work habits.  Almost all $3.00 labor is eventually worth $7.25 to someone, somewhere.  So you'll never catch me lobbying for an alternative universe where low-skilled labor is worth as much as skilled labor.  I don't have that mindset.  As long as the parties in the job agreement does what they says they're gonna do, it's none of my business, or yours.

Here's another possibility for the contradiction.  Statists generally aren't held responsible for unintended consequences of their policies.  Rather than voting for the candidate who promises to reduce eliminate Social Security payments to millionaires, they support the guy who is going to print money to make the payments.  The kids don't see an immediate harm to themselves, and plus, kids can't vote.  That might explain some of the bizarre policies, and the same explanation easily applies to stimulus packages, economic development boondoggles, and healthcare debacles.

Those theories - love of meddling and freedom from consequences - aren't enough to explain all of it.

There's always the possibility, of course, that they're just freakin' stupid.

"Like Shooting Fish In A Barrel" - Let's interview the anti-Koch protesters

Oh Lord help us all.

There are rumors that the evil Koch brothers, Charles and David, might buy the L.A. Times.  Just having one libertarian-ish print rag on the west coast was enough to send The Great Herd Of Independent Minds into a frenzy.

David Koch ran for Vice-President on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1980.  The platform he advocated included ending the Drug War (a war which the L.A. Times supports, BTW), recognizing marriage equality, eliminating business kickbacks subsidies, and all the other planks of the Libertarian platform that have been solidly in place since about 1971.

The evil Koch brothers donated something like $20 million dollars to the ACLU to fight George Bush's Patriot Act.  I have a deep admiration for activist Radley Balko, who is partly funded by the Koch bro's.  Balko spends his days getting wrongly convicted death-row inmates released from Barack's jails, and fighting the Random Conviction Generator that is my home state of Mississippi's "criminal justice" system.

Remember that.  Now, get up.  Make some popcorn.  Come back.  Hit play.  The folks from :40 through :59 are absolutely priceless.

And when you're finished, help me promote the idea of the Koch brothers purchasing the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.  I promise to re-subscribe.

Quote Of The Day, from Daniel Hannan

Via Samizdata, here's British M.P., Daniel Hannan:

The Tea Party, perhaps more than any other contemporary movement, brings out the 'Yeah, but what they're really saying…' tendency. The 'tea' stands for 'Taxed Enough Already' but, if you relied on the BBC and the Guardian for your information, you might not know it. Many Lefties pretend – or perhaps have genuinely convinced themselves – that the Tea Party is clandestinely protesting against immigration or abortion or the fact of having a mixed race president; anything, in fact, other than what it actually says it's against, viz big government. The existence of a popular and spontaneous anti-tax movement has unsettled the Establishment. They'd much rather deal with a stupid and authoritarian Right than with a libertarian one. Hence the almost desperate insistence that the Tea Partiers have some secret agenda.

I get especially p.o.'d about the race angle, especially when people like Alan West or Herman Cain or Bobby Jindal or Nikki Haley were elected or are supported by a massive number of Tea Partiers.

It's really hard for The Left to change their script.

On a totally unrelated note, here's one of my favorite Daniel Hannan rants. It really gets crankin' at the 1:50 mark.

Pure, undiluted, nasty Brit greatness.

Don't you hate it when people won't follow the script?

Here's former Democratic Presidential wannabe (and borderline libertarian) Mike Gravel, answering questions on Sarah Palin, being a mayor, Troopergate, and....gasp....who should be blamed for the Iraq war. Gravel also flirted with the Libertarian nomination this year but couldn't get any traction.

This is from a left-wing radio outlet called Pacifica. The last two minutes of this interview are priceless. Priceless. Remember, Gravel represented the Democrats in the Senate for two terms.

Wouldn't the world be more interesting if all of our politicians could say what they really thought?

A Bob Barr/Mike Gravel Libertarian ticket might be doing better than the current Barr/Wayne Root offering. Oh well.

"Clinton Wasn't Vetted, Chet Edwards Was" and "If You Don't Vote For Obama, You're A Racist"

I try to at least browse the offerings on Salon and Slate every day, kind of like some Lefties claim to "monitor" Rush Limbaugh.
It helps innoculate me from getting enthusiastic about anything done, said, typed, or attempted by Republicans, plus their Arts & Entertainment essays are usually top notch.
And even though I know going in that I'll see some political opinions (which shouldn't have survived The Dark Ages) labeled as "Progressive", the trip is usually worth it.

Not today.

Let's start with this somewhat breathless investigation by Alex Koppelman, from Salon.com: "Clinton wasn't vetted, Chet Edwards was".

Let me retype that. "Hillary Clinton, who got almost as many votes in the Democratic primaries as Obama, wasn't seriously considered as a plausible Vice-Presidential candidate but obscure Texas congressman Chet Edwards got to turn in all his documents and answer a lot of questions from the vetting committee and that's not fair."

(Politico's Mike) Allen quotes one unnamed Democratic official as saying that Clinton "was not asked for a single piece of paper. She and Senator Obama have never had a single conversation about it." The source also says that Clinton never met with Obama's vetting team. In his article on all this, Allen pointedly contrasts this report with Obama's having frequently said Clinton "would be on anybody's short list."

Responding to the story, a Democrat sympathetic to Clinton told Salon, "If Mike's right, the PUMAs (a delightful acronym that means "Party Unity, My Ass") are going to burn down the Pepsi Center" (where the Democratic convention is being held). Many Democrats have believed, however, that a formal vetting process wasn't really necessary when it came to Clinton, as all the information that would normally be examined is already public.

Once again, can you imagine what questions a vetting committee would have for The Clintons? Click here for my shortlist.

Moving on to Slate.com's crime against logic, someone named Jacob Weisberg has written "IF OBAMA LOSES: Racism is the only reason McCain might beat him".

Wow.

I like Obama ok, considering that he's a Democrat from the Chicago machine who has the foreign policy experience of Emily Dickinson. His most significant executive experience was with former terrorist William Ayers, and you're not going to get to see the documents relating to that experience until December. The guy just hasn't done a lot yet. McCain has.

What would happen if we did a reverse "Lincoln Osiris" treatment on Obama, and turned him white? What if we gave him the name Barry O'Reilly? And what if we gave him the identical thin resume? Does anyone believe that generic two-year senator Barry O'Reilly could've beaten The Clintons, much less go up against John McCain?

Mr. Weisberg doesn't understand that Obama's race has helped get him this far, and if he wins the presidency it will be because his race was seen as a positive that outweighed his lack of experience. No white candidate could've defeated the Clintons. Impossible.

As a former Mississippian who grew up in a racist environment, with segregated schools and doctor's offices, I'm glad to see a black man get this far. I think our first black president will do a lot to finish healing the damage. I'd be happier, though, with a first black president named Colin Powell.

The fact that I'm going to vote for Bob Barr instead of Barack Obama doesn't make me a racist.

And someone needs to point out to Jacob Weisberg that they're having a big sale at Clues-R-Us. Maybe he'll get one.

I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends, Left Wing Edition

Here are a few noteworthy posts from the left side of the spectrum....

I LOVE, LOVE, love, love, love The Electronic Village. Love it. Even when I think The Villager is dead wrong, he expresses himself well. His posts are usually short and straight to the point. The EV is a combination aggregator/bulleting board/comment field gold mine for African American bloggers and the African American point of view. Here's a list of The Top Ten Black Blogs of 2008. How do we know they're the Top Ten? Because The Villager said so, and it's his site. If you came of age in the '70s and miss the music, check out Old School Fridays (every Friday). And sometimes The Villager tells you things you already knew, but provides more evidence for your opinion.

Jobsanger has a good post about imperfect Presidential candidates, called "Obama's Not Perfect, But He's Our Candidate". That's the state of mind I'm trying to achieve with Bob Barr. He also provides a left-wing rationale for the recent Supreme Court decision striking down gun control laws.

Left Is Right has posted too many bells and whistles on his site, and it takes too long to download. He's usually pretty good. I wish him a speedy recovery.

Lotus - Surviving A Dark Time - is shocked, shocked, I say...when he discovers that the Bureau of Land Management is in bed with some corporate interests. Or maybe we really do need to wait a half decade while they do Environmental Impact Studies before they put up solar panels in the middle of nowhere. You decide. Mr. Lotus is a good guy, and we emailed back and forth a bit when we did some reciprocal linkage. He's someone you'd like to have for a neighbor.

Tbogg has been going at it online since 2002, and the posts are getting further and further apart. He was great when angry. He was great when he was happy. Hope he gets the fire back in his belly.

I got acquainted with The Revolution Script through Soobdujour. This guy has amazing collections of Revolutionary posters, guerilla warfare training manuals, and the like. He's also the only Marxist gun nut I've ever encountered. I love the internet.

Turning Left gets worked up over Dr. James Dobson misinterpreting Barack Obama's speech at the Call To Renewal meeting. And they have a cool picture of Dobson in front of a flag. Heh heh heh heh heh....

I don't have nearly enough Lefties on the blogroll, and I'm open to suggestions.
